  • 1958 – British artist Gerald Holtom designed the Peace Sign (the CND symbol), which became one of the most recognized icons in the history of graphic design.
  • 1965 – Malcolm X was assassinated in New York City; his legacy profoundly shaped African-American literature, photography, and protest art.
  • 1990 – The epic biographical film Mountains of the Moon, noted for its expansive cinematography, was released in the United States.
