  • 1923 – Archaeologist Howard Carter unsealed the burial chamber of Pharaoh Tutankhamun; the discovery revealed masterpieces of ancient Egyptian art and craftsmanship.
  • 1957 – The Ingmar Bergman masterpiece The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet) premiered in Sweden, becoming one of the most influential works in world cinema.
  • 1968 – The first 9-1-1 emergency telephone system was inaugurated in the US; while technical, its implementation has since been depicted as a dramatic device in countless films and television arts.
