  • 1899 – Maurice Bernhardt, son of the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt, opened the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt in Paris, one of the most prominent venues for European drama.
  • 1929 – The character Popeye the Sailor, created by E. C. Segar, made his first appearance in the Thimble Theatre daily comic strip.
  • 1954 – The iconic jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker performed his final public concert at Town Hall in New York City, just months before his passing.
  • 1961 – Miles Davis, a pioneer of modern jazz, recorded his influential album Someday My Prince Will Come at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City.
  • 1963 – Fluxus artist Robert Filliou proposed the concept of Art's Birthday, claiming that art was born 1,000,000 years ago on this day.
